Statement on Electoral College Meetings, “Fake Electors” Returning

Today, as the Electoral College meets in each state to formally cast their votes for the 2024 presidential election, Informing Democracy Managing Director Peter Bondi issued the following statement:

“In America, voters determine the outcome of elections—not rogue officials or politicians. As electors gathered to cast their state’s electoral college votes, those in Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania included electors who attempted to overturn the 2020 election—some of whom are actively facing criminal charges for their role in the scheme.

“While we are encouraged that today’s votes were cast without controversy, when electors serve in the Electoral College who tried to subvert the will of the voters in 2020 by illegally holding rival convenings of ‘fake electors,’ it is corrosive to our democracy.”

Additional Background on Returning “Fake Electors” Backing Trump:

Four years ago, “fake electors” gathered in seven swing states where Donald Trump lost the popular vote in a scheme by the former president and his allies to try to overturn the election results. This year, at least 14 “fake electors” are returning to serve as presidential electors in the 2024 election in support of President-elect Donald Trump, including:

  • Michigan: Amy Facchinello, Hank Choate, John Haggard, Marian Sheridan, Meshawn Maddock, Timothy King

  • Nevada: Jesse Law, Michael McDonald

  • Pennsylvania: Andy Reilly, Ash Khare, Bernadette Comfort, Bill Bachenberg, Patricia Poprick
