Statement On Fourth Anniversary of January 6th Insurrection
On the fourth anniversary of the January 6 insurrection and attack on the U.S. Capitol, Informing Democracy Executive Director Jenna Lowenstein issued the following statement:
“On January 6, 2021, our democracy itself was attacked. Years later, we’re still facing widespread efforts to undermine our Constitution and our elections as the movement that led to the insurrection grows—further empowered by an incoming president who promised to pardon the criminals behind the insurrection.
“In 2024, we saw campaigns of mass disinformation, escalating voter suppression tactics throughout the voting process, and attempts to sow chaos at polling places and ballot drop boxes through violent acts like arson—all because election deniers like Donald Trump continued to sow doubt about the results and wrongfully target the dedicated public servants who administer our elections.
“As we look ahead, after the presidential election is certified by Congress today, we know that the stakes for our democracy could not be higher. That’s why Informing Democracy is more determined than ever to continue to make transparent the people and processes behind how our elections are decided.
“With anti-democracy actors returning to the White House and Congress, we will continue to ensure that pro-democracy partners have the tools they need to defend American democracy and the Constitution—not through rhetoric alone, but through increasing transparency, corrective action, and the unwavering commitment to ensuring voters determine the outcome of elections, not rogue officials.”
