On Third Anniversary of January 6th Insurrection

Ahead of the anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol tomorrow, Informing Democracy Managing Director Peter Bondi issued the following statement:

“Three years after the insurrection, it’s become clear that January 6, 2021 was the beginning of the overt efforts to upend our democracy, not the end. From local officials posing threats to fair elections to the weaponization of election conspiracy theories, the anti-democracy movement has grown in strength, became better organized, and tested new tactics to use in the year ahead. Despite these continued efforts to undo the Constitution, when the Congress gathers to certify the results of the next presidential election, on January 6, 2025, democracy will and must prevail.

“Rightly, law enforcement continues to hold accountable the minority who tried to subvert the 2020 election. And in the aftermath of the failed coup, the vast majority of the country are showing their commitment to upholding our democracy: authoritarian candidates have been routinely rejected at the ballot box, courts are reversing partisan power grabs by state legislatures, and democracy advocates across the country are countering the efforts of those trying to undermine the vote.

“But elections are still at risk from attack and Informing Democracy is more determined than ever to continue shining a light on the people and processes behind how our votes are counted and elections are certified, to strengthen and build confidence in our democracy through greater transparency. We’re expanding our portfolio of states and seeking out more pro-democracy partners to ensure that the coalition supporting our Constitution is stronger than those working to tear it up.”
