Election Deniers Like Johnson Must Not Hold Speaker’s Gavel
After GOP lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives put forth Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson as yet another candidate for Speaker of the House, Informing Democracy Executive Director Jenna Lowenstein shared this statement:
“The lack of leadership and disregard for democracy we’re seeing from House Republicans is a stain on our country. It is appalling that Republican lawmakers have repeatedly put forth Speaker candidates who have broken their oath to the Constitution—including those who tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
“Mike Johnson, Jim Jordan, and Tom Emmer are a poison in our government—and no election denier should be allowed to hold the Speaker’s gavel.”
Additional Background on GOP’s House Speaker candidates:
Johnson and Jordan are election deniers who voted to overturn the election results in 2020.
Johnson led the “amicus brief in a Texas lawsuit to invalidate millions of votes and the election results from four key swing states that went for President-elect Joe Biden,” which both Jordan and Emmer signed onto.
Johnson, Jordan, and Emmer all voted twice against establishing the January 6th investigative committees.
Johnson, Jordan, and Emmer voted against the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would allow the Department of Justice to overturn discriminatory state and local voter suppression laws.
Johnson, Jordan, and Emmer voted against the Freedom to Vote Act, which would protect voters and prohibit discriminatory voter purges and the partisan removal of election officials.
