Condemning Fulton County Election Board Member’s Refusal to Certify Primary Election Results

In Georgia, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Fulton County Board of Registration & Elections member Julie Adams refused to certify presidential primary election results from March and has filed a baseless lawsuit against the county, the county’s elections director, and the board after the state’s May primary. In response, Informing Democracy Election Law Counsel Justin Berger shared this statement:

“There should be no place for politics in election administration—but that’s exactly what Julie Adams is trying to do. This lawsuit is a clear attempt to slow down our electoral process, manufacture suspicion,  and pave the way for bad actors to jeopardize the certification of November’s election results.

“Moreover, in refusing to certify the results, Adams is not only obstructing the work of Fulton County’s election administrations, but is also undermining the foundations of our democracy. Certification is required by law and it is not up for debate—failing to do so is against the law and a betrayal of the trust of the American people.

“Adams’ actions and her ridiculous lawsuit should remind us all that our democracy is still at risk, and that we must remain vigilant against efforts to sabotage our elections.”
